故事開始於懷俄明州的鄉間，午夜在线小视频的主人公懷厄爾普（凱文·科斯特納 Kevin Costner 飾）就出生在那裏。為了參加南北戰爭報效祖國，懷厄爾普離家出走英勇的趕往前線，卻因為年齡的問題而被拒絕入伍。之後，懷厄爾普開始攻讀法律，並且邂逅了名為烏瑞拉（貝蒂·巴克利 Betty Buckley 飾）的女子。兩人雙雙墜入愛河之後很快便攜手步入了婚禮的殿堂。
然而，幸福美滿的日子卻並沒有維係太長的時間，一場大病奪走了烏瑞拉的生命，令懷厄爾普陷入了絕望和自暴自棄之中。就在他瀕臨崩潰之時，父親尼古拉斯（吉恩·哈克曼 Gene Hackman 飾）來到了他身旁，將懷厄爾普重新引回了正途。
