本片根據老舍同名小說改編。勤勞的農村青年祥子（張豐毅 飾）生活在舊社會的北京郊區，失去土地和父母後，祥子來到北京在劉四開的人力車廠當車夫。祥子起早貪黑，沒日沒夜地幹，希望能自己買一輛洋車，不用再租別人的車拉。祥子終於湊夠了100元買了輛新車，然而沒過多久就被軍閥壯丁連人帶車抓走了。祥子在軍隊裏負責用洋車拉運炮彈，部對被擊潰後逃跑時祥子的車滾下了山穀。士兵們都逃散了，祥子意外撿了軍隊裏的三匹駱駝。他賣了駱駝，又回到了劉四的車廠當車夫，人們給他起名叫“駱駝祥子”。劉四的女兒虎妞（斯琴高娃 飾）看上了祥子，用酒灌醉了祥子……
