本片用一種現實與記憶穿插的方式勾勒了男主人公X（吉奧吉歐·艾伯塔基飾）與女主人公A（德菲因·塞裏格飾）剪不斷理還亂的情感糾葛。X的記憶中對於巴洛克宮殿裏的亭台樓閣如數家珍，在他的描述性旁白中，人們得以感受到他內心巨大的波瀾。在劇場舞台上，戲子正在表演著離愁別緒的橋段。觀眾席上X跟貴婦A對視良久。歇息之時，劇場響起舞曲，X向A邀舞，兩人在近距離表達了對彼此的感受。A覺得這個X是個關注自己的陌生人，但是X卻講述了去年與她發生的一段鮮為人知的故事。期間，還穿插了X跟A丈夫M（莎查·皮托夫飾）遊戲對決的場景……
